Ok,
I've tried to make contributions to make this forum interesting. I've been nudged to make contributions to the forum. I'm just wondering why there isn't any activity in discussion lately? We all have lives to live and things happening....but hey, we are all collectors here. Stories are interesting, things found in an attic are great topics. I'm just saying Lurkers in a Forum does not make it any more attractive to the rest of us.
I know the economy is bad, and we all are holding back on purchasing. But how about telling what we have found, or are looking for and maybe doors will open for the rest of us. How about offering trade items, duplicate cylinders or records, that's not hard to do. Click on the reply button.
Good Grief people, is it that hard to get away from "Dancing with the Stars"? Sorry, trying to be dramatic without showing cleavage. If the economy is bad, can we not post up items for trade? or things we are looking for? Are there any ideas for topics?
I've been a collector for 18 years and keep my ear toward the ground, I'm happy to help other collectors and keep my eyes open for records, machines and parts, etc.
Can we keep this forum alive? We need contributions, even simple ones.
It takes two to make a conversation. ColoCrank

Good point! Dancing with the stars, that's funny... As for me, I've been watching baseball.
GO PHILS!!!!!! BTW, Philly is right across the river from Camden, so this is actually phonograph related. OK, you asked, right??

Colocrank makes a good point. As a matter of fact, I was thinking just yesterday that I hadn't made any contributions for a long time, and I wondered why. It certainly isn't because of "Dancing With the Stars," but old movies on TCM could be a culprit... But seriously, here's my problem: I could make postings all day on historical points regarding antique phonographs. That's the stuff that turns me on. However, I also enjoy seeing items that others have found/restored. I've thought on several occasions that I should post some photos of this or that. But that brings me to my little problem... I'm fundamentally a private person - - at least until I get to know someone. When I'm reading about what others are doing, it strikes me as simply sharing and I enjoy the process. Yet, when I contemplate doing the same thing, it strikes me as bragging - and I have an abhorrence of bragging. I don't even like the term "bragging rights," because it presumes to give license to misbehavior. I feel like I'd be posting something on the Internet - to people who are largely unknown to me - while exclaiming "Whoopee! Look at what I've got!" I realize none of this is very logical, but that's often what inhibits me. And let me again stress that I don't regard the posts by others in that light. That being stated, I do respond to requests for assistance or "Has anybody seen one of these?" questions. I genuinely enjoy helping people (I recently retired from a 32-year career doing that), and enjoy posting in response to requests such as "Show Me Your Berliner Record" (I sort of went overboard on that one). Subconsciously I must feel it's okay to help - but not to spontaneously "brag." Is anyone else here afflicted with similar inhibitions? If so, maybe we can organize a support group... Well, there's one kook's explanation for his limited postings! Best to all, George P.

I think at this point it's just slow for no particular reason, it'll pick back up again.
We could certainly up the number of posts here if we had more bird-dog posts pointing to every craigslist ad or eBay auction for a bargain phonograph or pointing out every brass reproducer, but to me that is not what this board is about, unless it's relevant to a discussion.

Not now, Wayne! I'm busy watching "Dancin'..."
Actually my excuses are many. The best and most pressing is that as the lone employee in a large company (10K+ employees) who is allowed to work 100% from home (and 1200 miles from the office), has survived three rounds of layoffs etc, I feel that work has to be my priority. Besides that, 3 kids, hockey, 3 other hobbies, honey-do list, home projects, managing my other business adventures etc there just isn't much time. The energy level certainly isn't there right now either.
I'll lurk on the board a few times a day to see what is (or in our case, isn't) being posted but that's about it right now. And besides, there hasn't been much excitement in my phono-world for over a year besides that Polyphone envelope - and I did post about that.
I look at most of the major phono-boards and regardless of the total number of posts, there isn't much being said.

OK George, we've not met, and I've only seen you a few times at phono shows, BUT-you're makin' me nuts (and believe me, I have a good head start--PM me if you want to learn more about that--it's a really "interesting" story, but not phonogrpah related, and has changed the way I see and think about other people!).
As one of the foremost experts (among quite distinguished company I might add) on this forum, I always feel good when you comment on some lame posting I've made. The few pictures I've seen of your collection are fabulous and I definitely would like to see more.. If you feel like you are "bragging" then forget about it. I learn so much from all youse guys and your comments on pictures I post, questions I have, or even some dumb jokes, are all appreciated.
I've learned mostly from reading F&P, Reiss, Baumbach, and Frow books-there was one collector who was close enough for me to learn some things from, but there's still a lot of knowledge lacking ( and much of what I learn at this age is forgotten in 5 minutes).. oh what was I saying?....
I've done a number of Phonofocus postings and always enjoyed the responses.. and yes, removed the horn "connector" from the Ideal as a result.
One of my biggest highlights was when Jeff and Jim visited and checked out all my menagerie. It was great to hear their comments and to "brag" about some of the treasures I've accumulated. They didn't seem to mind.
Whew, time for a cleansing breath I think.... I've written enough and can see that my therapy session is about over. Thanks again gang for making this a lot of fun!!

Steve,
You're very kind. Now that Rene has shown me how it's done, I'll screw up my courage and post something. It's getting cold here... The leaves are starting to fall, and the snow will be here before we know it. I'll need something to do all winter...!

No need for alarm. I remember a poll concluded we are between 40 and 65. Very much alive. Just taking a nap, that's all.
Maybe a new poll is in order. It may show we are in slower paced portions of the globe too.
It is slower here in Tucson and this New Yorker likes it that way!
James.
PS - I vote to let this thread fade away, as we now have awakened.
