Thank you Wayne & Scott for the pictures. I was hoping to get a look at the differences. There doesn't seem to be much difference at all apart from the label, connector & pat no on my soundbox. It makes me wonder just what was patented on July 2, 1918 -not 1916 as I stated before. After seeing it in better light, it's an 8 & not a 6 Mine is 2 5/16" diameter, which is not much bigger than an Exhibition, but yours appears to be larger, if the soprano is the same size as an exhibition.

"Spirited alcohol" is what we would call "denatured alcohol" today. It is ethyl alcohol or ethanol (moonshine) with enough methanol mixed in to make it poisonous to drink. Same as your common shellac thinner.
"methyl hydrate alcohol" is methanol, also called wood alcohol. This is what is used to make the ethanol above poisonous.
They both burn with almost invisible blue flame. Be careful.

Jim, Do they burn with the same heat rating???.For me to buy (moonshine) here in Canada,I would need to apply for a special license or move to Tennessee How does one explain to the feds that I need it for a phonograph.I was told that the wood alcohol was fine and it seems to provide enough heat to run the engine at top speed.I will be careful!!!!!.

Use "denatured alcohol" if you want to use what the original instructions call for. That is moonshine with a touch of wood alcohol in it to make it poisonous to drink, so they don't treat it like moonshine once they have done that.
Heating value of denatured alcohol (29.7 MJ/kg) is higher than the wood alcohol (22.7 MJ/kg) you are using. That does not mean it will make the phono hotter, it just means you burn less fuel volume for same power.

Sure!!!.one jar for the machine and one for me to numb the pain from the 1st degree burns. Also, thanks to Jim for the info on the heat rating.I will try the denatured alcohol and see how it performs.

You might try what is sold as Marine Stove Fuel, it's basically denatured alcohol but seems a little easier to handle. I use it in an old fashioned table stove (ca. 1910) and vintage chafing dishes.

I've always used denatured in my Maestrophone. No problem!

I assume the pictures were hosted on some external site which has since disappeared, so the links are broken.
