I think I posted this question in the wrong thread. I apologize. This is C model VV-XVI I have recently inherited. My first phonograph, and I am fascinated by the physics involved, so I want to learn as much as I can. I rebuilt the Exhibition on it and it sounds amazing, but I have a question about the finish. I'm pretty sure this one has been refinished at some point (some shellac is in a line on the maintenance and date stickers inside). Can anything be done for it, or is it best to live with this finish? Also, when I wind it pretty far, I can at best get three sides played through without any slowing on 10" 78s. So, finish and springs? Any advice? Oh, and the speed control has to be set at 60 for the strobe to show a speed of 78 (if I'm doing it right). Thanks in advance. Attachments:

Thanks for the links. So, what I'm reading here makes me think I should wait on the cabinet, but address the mechanical issues first. I saw in "Look for the Dog" the three spring motor was meant to play for ten minutes between winds. Mine goes about 6 to 8 minutes which sounds pretty good for a 102 year old. The speed issue is more pressing, then, yeah? That is likely a governor problem or just gunk on the gears?

The victrola pictured looks fine in its setting. Very presentable.
Over time, the grease hardens and the the mainspring does not release its stored energy easily. The spring may have been partly or fully wound and left unused for years. All of the moving parts need to be cleaned of the gunk. Invest in an overhaul and put that machine to good use.

Can anything be done for it, or is it best to live with this finish? the finish looks fine in the picture, I'd leave it alone. the indicator is out of adjustment. Search around on this board (or one of the other phono/gramo boards) for details on how to set the indicator. Depends on the style of indicator, but it should be pretty simple to adjust (yours probably has the "round dial" indicator).
