I'm looking for advice on restoring the finish to my oak Victor VII. The finish is clean but has "alligatored". Is there an easy way to bring back the smooth finish or do I have to strip it down and start anew? I am new to refinishing and want to get it right.

There are ways to reamalgamate the alligatored finish by dissolving the old shellac. Stripping it down is an extreme measure since when you do that you no longer have a antique. The finish is part of the antique value in an old phonograph, but sometime it is so bad you have no choice.

How true. Servicing an antique Especially phonographs is different than restoring an antique. If you are restoring it for reselling then it loses its value greatly. But if you restore it for furniture benefit to make it look nice and keeping it that is different.

Wood restoration is necessary for renovating woods attraction, But strong and durable wood doesn't need restoration because its durable and long lasting .
