I just purchased a Victor VI in unbelievably pristine condition. I have noticed that the motor runs pretty well but gets sluggish around 3/4 of the way through a record. Do my springs need to be replaced or is there some other reason this might be happening? Any advice is welcome and appreciated. -Mike

Mike,
It's unlikely that you need new mainsprings, but it's quite possible that your springs need cleaning/lubrication. This is not a job for the uninitiated nor faint of heart, as each mainspring is 12 - 15 feet long and tightly coiled into a spring barrel. Additionally, springs may be coiled clockwise or counter-clockwise, and the disposition of each spring should be carefully observed.
A Victor VI (an external horn machine) will have three mainsprings. A Victrola VI (an internal horn machine) will have two. If you're mechanically handy, there are Youtube tutorials on mainspring removal, cleaning, lube, and reassembly. Otherwise, I'd recommend having a professional do the job. There are many who do this, and your location will probably determine who would be the best choice.
Good luck!

Thank you George. I will look into this. My main source of income over the past several years has been to design animatronics so I do know my way around a set of tools but I must admit that I am very reluctant to go digging around in a venerable old machine like this one. I will take your advice and look for a professional. Do you know anyone in the Pasadena, CA area? -M

I don't, but I'll bet others do. The board's been pretty slow lately... Anyone?
