I know of two 78s in my collection mention of specific gangsters. These two records use the same song to deliver the message with different titles.
The first disc is Velvet Tone 2504-V (365052), recorded December of 1931 by Bob Stukeley and Ben Weaver, The Death of Jack "Legs" Diamond is the song, lyrics by Bob Miller, and starts off...
Another gangster dead A bullet through his head Now Jack Diamond has too paid his debt
The second disc is Conqueror 8385 (15157), recorded July 1934 by Frank Luther Trio, Crime Does Not Pay, lyrics by Bob Miller
Another gangster dead A bullet through his head And now John Dillinger has paid his debt
The songs are the same with subtle changes. The moral being...
To yourself be true And there's nothing you'll do That'll ever disgrace the ones you love For crime doesn't pay 'Cause on that judgement day All accounts will be settled up above
The flip side of the Frank Luther Trio is another sung by them, Outlaw John Dillinger, lyrics by Bob Miller
Any gangster types lurking in your cabinets?
James
