I would like to ask for help. My name is Michael (I am Nippers son), I am in College, and trying to earn some money. I bought this machine and a few cylinders locally. Only I don't know anything about it. My dad said if I wanted to learn I could post it on the board and ask for help. An idea of model style- and value. I may sell it on Ebay. It has a crack on the lid. It cranks and plays. Thanks, Michael. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Hi michael the machine you have looks like an early model square case 4 clip lid Edison standard model A machine. Circa 1898-1902. These came with a listening device. later after market horns could be bought for this model and others. Some of them came with an automatic reproducer and recorder. which used glass diaphragms. If you have the serial plate on the unit the serial number starts with an S followed by the production number. It would be nice to know the serial number. Here is a link on this type of machine just place the mouse over the small thumbnails to look at this type of model machine. I have seen the machines go for (depending on the shape and if all the parts are there) from $900-$1700. Maybe more. www.greenhillsgf.com/Project_Edison_Standard-A-Squaretop.htm

Hi Everyone- I'm a new guy like Michael, getting back into collecting phonograph machines and I'm thinking about buying this one. MY only concern (other than the spring needs replaced-it runs out of gas after about a minute) is that I think it make be a repro horn since I have not found another example like it.
Is anyone familiar with this particular machine?
Thanks- Rick

If its the one in the link that i posted in the reply to michael s, yes it is an aftermarket horn. Edison never made horns on the Early square top model A machines. These machines came with a listening device. In about 1902 other companies made horns for these machines. So in reality you are still getting a pretty original machine.

Thank you so much Eckster!! You were helpful and informative. The serial number is S27747. I ended up posting it on Ebay.... www.ebay.com/itm/261194052258?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_270wt_1140I will tell my father you helped me! I will also let you know how it goes. Thanks, Michael. I do not have all the parts. Only what is in the photos- I am missing the recorder items. I am really not sure about the reproducer. But overall maybe it will help pay some of my upcoming bills.

Edison also supplied a funnel type horn and listening tube with that Standard.
