ATM would like to welcome the California Antique Phonograph Society (CAPS) as an addition to our discussion categories. This new category can be used and read by both members and guests of CAPS and ATM. CAPS will be able to post announcements, news and followup conversations from meetings. They will also be able to gather on the chat board for multi-member conversations. This will be a very useful tool to quickly communicate with CAPS members.
This area will be staffed by René Rondeau (Tinfoilphono) and George Paul (phonogfp). As many of you know, both men have been cornerstones in the phonograph collecting community for years and are members of ATM also. You can contact them through the Private Message system of this board to talk about ideas and subject matter for the Online News or you can post suitable posts instantly in this new CAPS category.
CAPS members can use this new tool whether they join ATM or remain a guest. ATM membership is free. We welcome the many fine members of this society and appreciate their invaluable knowledge they can share with other collectors from around the world.
We look forward to a productive and mutually fulfilling relationship for years to come!
Regards
Jeff (Moo) and the staff of ATM

Jeff, Thanks very much for devoting a place on the ATM Board to CAPS. I suspect some ATM Board readers are wondering, "What is CAPS, and why is it cluttering up this great message board?" Well, a few years ago, I was wondering the same thing (except for the message board part). At that point I had been collecting for about 37 years, and had tried several phonograph collecting organizations. My only reason for joining such organizations was to learn more about the great phonographs and records we collect. Unfortunately, I was seeing many inaccuracies in some of the publications, and found that I was learning very little history from those sources. Then I joined the California Antique Phonograph Society and started receiving its journal, the "Sound Box." What a difference! Now I do realize that not everyone is interested in learning about the history of antique talking machines and records. That's fine - but if you're always itching to delve into some historical alley you've never explored before, you owe it to yourself to try a subscription to the "Sound Box." Check out an on-line issue for free at www.ca-phono.org. It's the one phonograph publication I really look forward to receiving every 3 months - and it's well worth the wait! Then there's the CAPS Annual Phonograph Show & Sale, held every August. I live in New York, and traveling to Los Angeles is a big trip, but the few times I've been out there have definitely been worth it. It's a major show, featuring dealers we all know, plus some fellows who only set up there - and you never know what will turn up. Last time, I bought a Tamagno disc in its original picture sleeve, a "Q" Graphophone with a Sears decal, and some other interesting items. The level of merchandise is top-notch. I mourn the things I've missed in that parking lot on the way inside! Plus, there's an annual banquet featuring a speaker(s) and a concurrent silent auction, which is a lot of fun, with dozens and dozens of surprisingly nice phonographic items. All-in-all, it's a great evening - - even my wife and kids enjoyed it! (Speaking of which, Disney World, Knott's Berry Farm, and several other major attractions are right down the street!) This year marks the 25th anniversary for CAPS, and I expect some special plans are underway. If you're formulating travel/vacation plans for the summer, you might want to consider this. Again, more info on the show and banquet can be found at www.ca-phono.org. For myself, I'm hoping that we can discuss in greater depth the articles that appear in the "Sound Box," and perhaps even pursue some fun research among board members. I've been a member of CAPS for only 5 years now, but it's an organization I believe in. If you'll consider giving it a try, I think you'll agree. In any event, here's to many years of rewarding exchanges of information! Best to all, George Paul

As a member of CAPS for many years and new member to this message board, I welcome the collaboration. Thanks Moo for setting this up and making it possible.
Regarding membership in CAPS, the associated magazine, The Soundbox, is well worth the price of admission. I highly recommend it to all.

I hope to see this part of the board become very active!
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, suggestions, or (hopefully) submissions for publication in the Sound Box. I'm now in my sixth year as editor and all credit for the exceptional quality of the magazine goes to our terrific contributors. So don't be shy, if you have a great story to tell, please share it in the Sound Box.
And remember, one of the benefits of old-fashioned published articles over internet posts is their permanence: the Sound Box is being archived in many public research centers and will be an important source of information for researchers in decades to come, long after many Internet forums have evaporated into the ether.

CAPs is a great publication and I am glad to see some of its prominent scholarly members are on this board. I truly missed the journal "Antique Phonograph Monthly" published by Allen Koenigsberg when it ceased printing back in the early 1990s, but I was glad to see CAPs pick up where Allen left off. Definitely is the publication to subscribe to. Unfortunately I am not listening to my own advice since I let my subscription expire a couple years ago mainly due to changes in life like becoming a father. Now I must get myself together and resubscribe and hopefully I could be forgiven of this sin.

I also want to say how much I enjoy the CAPS Soundbox publication. First rate full of fun and informative articles. It's a great group and has really made a name for itself in recent years.
