A waste indeed.... It's out of my league but maybe he needs some cash AND a nice antique storage cabinet in trade!

Mr Moo, Since cylinder machines and related items are NOT my strong point.I think this cabinet should have a horn or something like the one in the book. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Here is the interesting part.He got the cabinet thru a trade in 1974.He traded a Edison floor model coin-op cabinet for it.Again,I could be wrong, but I think the other guy got the better deal.BTW,this cabinet is in the western US. Scott or Goerge would know more to a point of how bad he got took - but hands down any model floor coin-op machine would be valued a good bit more than this cabinet.

George IS the expert on all things phonograph but since I have the mic, I'll answer first.....
I think he got screwed! Of course, model, condition, originality etc trumps all but I have to assume it was in collector condition. Today that cabinet would probably bring between $5-7K (there was one at Union last year at the Oliphants booth I believe - anyone see the price?) while most floor standing coin-ops start in the $15K range.

Scott, I thought the Edison cabinet was the better end, even in 1974.The edison was just the empty cabinet with no coin or mech.I'm sure (depending on model) putting a mech back in would be not too hard.Finding the coin gear? .I told the man the cabinet would be better at 5K,but I guess he's not too concerned to sell.Question......Is this cabinet supposed to have a horn inside or not??. If it was only the Edison cabinet (without mech/motor/coin mech) then maybe your friend got the better deal. In any case, it was probably a fair trade.
