Good afternoon! I just picked up my first phonograph - It's an Edison Fireside Model A! I have four questions: (1) The plaque on the machine (behind where the cylinder is) states that it is a "Model A." Also, beneath nut that secures the shaft that holds the cylinder on the left side of the machine has a tiny gear knob which turns. Does that solidify that it is a Model A? The reason I ask is that the decal which says "2 Minute 4" on the bedplate is missing. (2) I have a Model S reproducer. Isn't that weird? Shouldn't it be a K? On the internet I have found at least one auction selling a Model A Fireside with a Model S reproducer. Hmm. (3) It plays very quietly. My unit is not loud at all, and I am not sure if that is because of the reproducer or because of the horn (see next question). Perhaps the stylus is worn (I do notice that gunk builds up on the stylus sometimes, but that could be because my cylinders are dirty). (4) What horn is this? Please see below for a picture of my unit (ignore my bad photo editing skills). I have never seen this horn on any Fireside online. According to my research, the Model A usually had a baby maroon morning glory horn, and the Model B had a cygnet horn. I have a Model A, but the horn I have has a "Cygnet No. 11" decal on top of it, but this does not look like a Cygnet. What is it?? Someone said it is an Edison Amberola horn - but I can't find any pictures of it. Here is a picture of it:

I've already replied on the Edison Phonograph board. Martinola also responded with specifics regarding your reproducer and horn. Here's another online forum where you can post: forum.talkingmachine.info/George P.

It's a great machine with a very unusual horn. I believe the horn had a military themed name and was called the "West Point" horn. Most model A Firesides had a K reproducer with the small morning glory maroon horn or a #10 cygnet. Don't let anyone talk you out of your find. It's a good one. Jerry Blais

Jerry,
If you look closely, you'll see that this is a horn from an Amberola X. The West Point horn has a rounded mouth similar to a Diamond Disc horn, and was not wood grained.

I've never seen a West Point horn in person and it's been years since I've seen a photo. My mistake... I saw the decal and jumped to conclusions. Jerry
