I have several machines from the acoustic era and to me the fat arm school house is the best for these records. You've got the extra large opening going to the horn and then you have a huge wood horn. I have a #2 reproducer on mine. I can play the same record on a Vic 5 with large metal horn, a #3 with wood or any number of early Victrolas the the SH wins every time. This machine had bug damage on the front legs but Ron Haring sold me a pair to replace them.

I agree, the School Model is best but make mine the School Model Orthophonic. I tell visitors that the Orthophonic made every other machine in my basement obsolete as soon as it was introduced. My wife, DeeDee, is a retired band & choir teacher and I am fortunate to own several "music teacher" machines in my collection. Jerry Blais

Jerry, If you are able you should post a picture of that rare bird. I've never seen a complete one.

Well Moo, some like 'em fat, some like 'em skinny. For playing acoustically recorded 78s, my favorite machine is my HMV Model 32 with its #4 reproducer, narrow tonearm and big 24" metal horn. Hey, and its case is OAK!

Cool, I wanted one of those and Carsten out bid me on it. But he did a great job bringing the one we fought over back to life so I forgive him.

Hey, and its case is OAK! Wow, that's very nice! If you can get the time, maybe you could do a phono focus on it sometime.

If you don't have much money to play with, then I like the Victor Colony. It's orthophonic of course & just a cut below a Credenza sound wise.

Actually for sound (and in my limitted newbian experience) I think my Edison BC-34 does pretty fair compared to my Orthophonics.
