I was getting a very nice Triumph ready for CAPS and used a product called "Simple Green" to remove the old oil buildup on the deck. I used it with a soft toothbrush and it worked great. It had no affect on the old and original striping. The product claims to be an all-purpose cleaner that is non-toxic and biodegradable.

If it's grease on unpainted metal parts, Kerosene (paraffin for you Brits out there ;D ) and a brush works great. Simple Green is great if you don't want to screw up painted materials.
One caveat, though: if the dyes used are analine and the surface coating is worn off, you can damage the pigments (actually remove them) as analine dyes are soluble in water and alcohol.
